Former Olympian Libby Ludlow writes children’s book about skiing

There are two things that Libby Ludlow has always loved: skiing and writing.

The former Olympic skier has found time to do both throughout her life, but she recently found a way to combine her two passions. She wrote a children's book about skiing.

The book, called A-B-Skis, teaches children about skiing while bringing to life the sensations and emotions associated with the sport. Ludlow is currently aiming to fund the publication of the book through a Kickstarter campaign that launched on Tuesday. The book is illustrated by local author Nathan Jarvis.

She came up with the idea to write a children's book two years ago after she had her first child. As she started reading children's books to her son, she discovered that there were few that talked about skiing.

"It stemmed from me having a kid, but I would say, the more I thought about it, the more I saw an opportunity to start building the next generation of passionate skiers," she said.

Although she had never published a book, she did have experience writing and editing content for several companies over the years. Plus, she said, it had been a dream of hers to be a published author since she was a kid. This seemed like the perfect way to accomplish that goal.

"It feels like a culmination of something I have always wanted, and it feels like the perfect intersection of my passion for skiing and my love of writing and my desire as a mom to share really memorable experiences with my son," she said.

She got to work writing the four-line rhymes that accompany each letter of the alphabet in the book last year. Then, she reached out to Jarvis to tell him about her project.

She had met him three years prior while he was teaching her class about children's book art. She assumed he would not be available to do the artwork, so she asked if he knew anyone who could help her. He heard about her mission to get kids excited about skiing and could not say no.

Jarvis is a ski instructor at Park City Mountain Resort, so the project aligned perfectly with two activities he is enthusiastic about.

"This is a way to say, 'Skiing is a blast,'" he said.

He has finished some of the pages and intends to work on the rest throughout the winter.

He and Ludlow hope kids and their parents who read the book learn what skiing is while getting excited about putting on skis and going down the mountain for the first time. Or, if they have already skied, they hope kids read the book to build their hype for the season.

Ludlow said she will never forget her first few times at a ski resort, where she said everything seemed magical and awe inspiring. She tried to encapsulate those feelings with her book.

"There is so much that is really special and unique about skiing," she said.

Being able to help increase participation for the sport she loves and accomplish her own dream has been surreal, she said.

The funds from the Kickstarter campaign will help Ludlow pay for the cost to publish the book. It is expected to be on shelves in the fall of 2019. To view or donate to the campaign, visit https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/abskis/a-b-skis.
