Friends celebrate a life well lived

Submitted by Pamela Dore Alford

On Saturday, Sept. 27, Park City is invited to a celebration of this extraordinary life. At 2 p.m. all are invited to gather at Avalanche Ranch in Oakley in the shadow of Krys’ beloved mountain guardians where we will witness the blessings of Lama Thuptan and the Buddhist monks who lent their compassionate wisdom to us all in her twilight. Following the blessings in the manner that Krys herself might have envisioned food, libations, loud music, and the exchange of invaluable memories will ensue until around 11:30 p.m.

Early on the morning of June 6, Krys Seligman passed away in the stoic and omnipresent gaze of the Wasatch mountains. In her immediate wake, the beautiful serenity of the lagging summer season cast its light on the surrounding sun-drenched hills signifying a peaceful and welcome end to her acutely painful war with the potent appendicidal cancer that finally claimed her earthly body. As they had for nearly 15 years, the chartreuse giants cradled Krys in their loving embrace (one last time) and bid a radiant farewell to one of Park City’s most compassionate and loved locals.

Born in southern California in 1969, much of Christine Seligman’s childhood was spent in transition as her family moved from California to Arizona, Arizona to Texas, and Texas to Florida. After losing her parents to cancer, Krys relocated to her aunt’s home in Indiana, where she finished High School and was subsequently admitted to Loyola University in Chicago.

In Chicago, Krys soaked up the vibrant energy of the city. She worked her first waitress gig, fulfilled her insatiable desire to meet new and engaging people, and cultivated the defining and eternal element of her being; her love affair with music. Singing in the influential house band, United Freaks of America, Krys developed her intoxicating voice into a force of nature. Her entrancing husk and voluptuous tone, matched only by her charismatic personality, took on a commanding and unmistakable quality that soon took Park City by storm.

In 1994, "The Singing Waitress" moved to the Wasatch. Before long, her ethereal and passionate acapella renditions of Patsy Cline and Sade echoed throughout the dining rooms and sushi bars of Main Street resonating in the collective minds of the awed local population. Her siren-like voice became a highly sought after commodity at the previously food-centric venues of Mikado and Zoom, and when the Park City Divas, came calling, Krys reintroduced her voice to the big stage. Under the searing lights of Park City’s community supported theatres, her music once again humbled all those in its presence.

Five years ago Krys purchased her own piece of mountain solitude in Weber Canyon, and settled in Oakley. Although she lived outside of town perhaps fulfilling some of her childhood dreams of Butch Cassidy’s "Wild West" her connection to Park City and its many beloved personalities never waned. A world traveler by nature, Krys’ bond with the people and mountains of the Wasatch was undeniable, and always brought her home. Upon her passing a great void was ripped in the fabric of the Park City community, and we all mourn her absence.
