A 17-year-old Salt Lake County girl died Monday after she collapsed while hiking near Heber.

Emergency dispatchers received the call at about 4 p.m.

"They said she had collapsed and was in and out of consciousness," Wasatch County Sheriff’s Office Chief Deputy Jared Rigby said. "She was with her mother at the time. She started complaining of not feeling well and then collapsed."

What caused the girl’s death is unknown, Rigby said.

She was staying at the Heber Valley Girls Camp, which is located near 6400 E. 1200 South.

Rigby said the camp is owned by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

"This was the first day of camp," he said. "She had been swimming that day and she had been walking around fine. Then she went on a hike."

The girl was taken to Heber Valley Medical Center where she was pronounced dead at about 7 p.m., Rigby said.

"She was conscious when she left the camp," he said.

The Office of the Medical Examiner is conducting an autopsy to determine the cause of death, Rigby said.
