Michael Watson, Park City

The Aug 2 letter by cyclist and resident John Haney stated his view that any resident would notice: There are a lot more cyclists on our roads this summer.

Also, what any resident would notice is the amount of roadwork being done. How many new bike lanes, signed and striped, will be incorporated into this current local area roadwork?

It could be said to be obvious that Park City is a natural as a setting for bike lanes. Dedicated bike lanes provide a safety advantage for the cyclist who rolls at a more vehicular speed than the users of separated, paved, multi-use pathways. If the heavy work is already underway and expensed, wouldn’t it seem cost-effective to add a few small signs and paint to new asphalt for striping and logos on a lane dedicated to safety of bicycle use? A lot of towns like ours have done it, and other towns in America have added systems of bike lanes to good effect: Portland, Oregon; Davis, Sacramento and Santa Rosa, California. Even Manhattan has recently completed a phase of its plan to increase its facilities for urban bicycle riders.

Of the voter-approved, voter-funded Walkable/Bikeable bond plan, how much of that $15,000,000 is earmarked for bike lanes on Park Avenue, Kearns Boulevard, Meadows Drive, Deer Valley Drive, Highways 224 and 248 within city limits?

How many voting for the Walkable/Bikeable bond are cyclists? Or may not be riders, but are parents, or just would like Park City town to have roads that are more safely shared with more than one mode of vehicle transportation? Would you care for some of the funding you will be paying for be spent on something you would support and use? I recommend you to inquire, then direct your expression of your needs to your local elected officials who will be overseeing where the dollars that you want to contribute will be spent. Has the elected Council heard your feelings? Have you expressed them?

I am a 30-year Park City area resident. I am a cyclist, and a Certified Cycling Instructor by the League of American Bicyclists. I ride 1,000 miles a year just in the immediate Park City area. I concur with Mr. Haney’s observation of the increasing number of cyclists using our roads, and our asphalt pathways and mountain trails. I believe Park City should have designated bike lanes on the major town arterial roads and I hope you do too. I encourage you to appropriately express that belief, take part in ‘The Process’ to help create a Park City that you want.
