Getting the holiday season off to a good start, Park City High School students conducted a food drive this week, donating proceeds to the food bank at St. Mary’s Catholic Church.

"The kids have been very excited about it," said George Murphy, high school teacher. "Normally they do it around Christmas time, doing it early for Thanksgiving, so the banks have food for the whole holiday season."

In addition to donated food, the high school generated about $350 for charitable causes from students and teachers, Murphy said. Days Supermarket in Heber donated money and products to the cause, giving food at cost, Murphy said.

Given all the donations to the Red Cross and other charities connected to the recent string of hurricane disasters, sometimes people experience "donor fatigue" and neglect some charities they might otherwise give to. "We want them to donate and get as much as they’re able to get. Locally they’re probably struggling a little more than normal," Murphy said. "A lot of local food banks have been left out." The high school also conducted a toiletries drive for the Red Cross to send to hurricane victims, Murphy continued.
