Last chance for playoffs for Lady Miners

by Jen Watkins, Of the Record staff

Despite losing its final game of the season 70-43 to Union at home Feb. 10, the Park City High School girls’ basketball team may have one more chance to make the playoffs. As of press time, Wasatch had to defeat American Leadership Academy (ALA) on Feb. 12 in order for the Miners to have one more shot.

If Wasatch defeated ALA, the Miners and ALA will face each other in a play-in game next week. The date and time have not been set. If ALA defeated Wasatch, the Miners will be out for the season.

Miners’ coach Sam White said the girls are still practicing as if they will face ALA next week. He believes there is also a good chance they can defeat ALA and reach the playoffs.

"We should at least stay with them and most likely beat them," White said.

The Miners defeated ALA 51-48 in the first home game of the season on Jan. 12. On Jan. 28, they traveled to ALA and lost 49-44. White said that came after losing four of their starters in the fourth quarter to foul trouble.

He said even if the girls do not make it the playoffs, he’s proud of everything they accomplished this year. Although the team struggled to win many games, he said it has come a long way since preseason.

"The girls are doing the best with what they know," he said.

White said the team is fairly young and many of the girls never played basketball before this year, like starter Camilla Hahn-Chiniquy. He took the team to a University of Utah women’s basketball game this season and said that was the first time many of them had ever seen a game outside of the Miners.

However, he said he is confident the team will be strong in the future, with the freshman team already showing great promise. He said he will spend the off-season motivating the middle schoolers to learn basketball now so they can play later on in high school.
