Winter sports parade had terrific vitality

Editor:

I just finished writing this letter to Shelley Gillwald, who organized the March 30 close of the winter sports program parade on Main Street. It was terrific! Perhaps you might like to include it in your "Letters to the Editor" column.

Dear Shelley,

We met in the restaurant right after that wonderful winter sports celebration parade March 30 on Main Street. My son, Blair Smith and wife Anne introduced us and told me you were responsible for the whole thing. Congratulations! A lot of work, but great spirit was everywhere! What a terrific vitality was demonstrated in that parade, exhibiting the unusual culture and vibrant aura of this very specialized community, Park City. Everything seemed to come together with the decorated cars and group after group after group after group proudly displaying their banners in their team jackets celebrating the close of the winter sports programs. I had no idea so many different teams and people were involved. It was thrilling to see and feel the enthusiasm of all, including the Olympic champions who so generously autographed the kids’ jackets, the proud kids themselves, their coaches, other students, a student band playing, parents, and at least one very proud grandmother. I was delighted to be here to witness that event.

My son and, I’m sure, others take the "culture" of this town for granted as they live here, but I think it is unusual and quite remarkable: focused, classy, good quality, and not stuffy nor pretentious. Besides the outdoor winter sport skill emphasis, good art abounds all over town. I am delighted some of my grandchildren actually have the opportunity to grow up here.

It was a big job to coordinate everything, Shelley. It was a wonderful parade and celebration. Congratulations!
