Lilo Malina

Long time Park City resident Lilo Malina, born Liselotte Freund, passed away Friday, May 7, in La Jolla, California. Lilo had moved to La Jolla last August to be with her daughter Carmen and her husband Ray as Lilo’s health was failing because of Alzheimer’s disease.

Lilo was born on August 9, 1934 in Bad-Kreuznach, Germany to Wilhelm and Adele Freund. She met Joseph Malina, former Czechoslovakian ski team Olympian, who was working with the U.S. Army in Bad-Kreuznach. They were married in 1955. They had two children, Alexandra who died as a teenager in a tragic car accident, and Carmen with whom she spent her last days. When they moved to the United States, Joe and Lilo worked and managed several ski areas in the mid-west where Joe became an expert in snowmaking. When the Park City Mountain Resort decided to get into the snowmaking business, they recruited Joe, and the Malina family subsequently moved to Park City in 1977. Joe installed the first snowmaking system, using a lot of recycled materials, and stayed on to manage the snowmaking at the resort while Lilo maintained a home-cleaning business for many years. Joe passed away in 2000.

Lilo is survived by her brother Willie Freund and his wife Gisela in Ohio; daughter Carmen and husband Ray Mendoza; and much loved grandchildren, Quentin and Adele. Lilo was a loving mother, grandmother and was well like in our community. She will be missed.
