Rising energy costs and inflation account for much of the increase in ski season passes, resort officials say.

Prices rise incrementally every year, and 2008 is no different, but the resorts believe their products are still worth every penny.

"Energy costs have tripled. I think everyone is feeling those effects," said Paula Altschuler, communications manager for Park City Mountain Resort. "The increases in pass prices will help pay for $10 million in improvements put in this year."

John Guay, director of skier services at Deer Valley, explained that prices are decided by looking at quantitative data like the rack rate, the price of its competition and the rate of inflation, and then a qualitative analysis of a skier’s experience at the resort.

"We do a gut check — what is the dollar worth, what’s fair? If too high, we’ll come down and vice versa," he said.

The lowest prices in the area are still offered by The Canyons with an adult season pass at $899. A five-day coupon book is $199. The Canyons also extended its early-season deadline for purchases to Oct. 15, said Libby Dowd, director of public relations.

Park City Mountain Resort boasts a new lift, a new run and more snowmaking capability this year, Altschuler said.

"Guests will really see the value in the season pass," she said.

The resort introduced a new Utah locals five-pack this year. It has black-out dates, won’t roll-over and doesn’t include the FastTracks, but is only $54 per day.

The Utah Celebration Pass was renamed the Utah Resident Eazy Access pass. It is a 10-day pass with FastTracks, no blackout dates and will rollover.
