Major road closures scheduled this weekend on I-80 and Bangerter Highway
Drivers advised to use alternate routes and avoid construction zones
The Utah Department of Transportation (UDOT) advises drivers to plan for closures scheduled on I-80, Bangerter Highway and I-215 this weekend. While the closures are in place, UDOT recommends planning travel to avoid construction zones. It also suggests using alternate routes where possible.
Details on these closures are provided below:
Westbound I-80 from I-215 (Exit 130) to 2300 East: Westbound I-80 will be closed between the I-215 ramp (Exit 130) near the mouth of Parleys Canyon and 2300 East from Friday, June 9, at 9 p.m. through Monday, June 12, at 5 a.m. All traffic on westbound I-80 will be detoured onto the ramp to I-215, then back onto I-80. Heavy traffic and delays of 30-40 minutes are expected along the detour route, so drivers with time-sensitive travel should plan ahead and allow extra time. Summit County drivers should especially plan accordingly if traveling to the airport or downtown Salt Lake City.
The closure will allow workers to break up the existing concrete and pave over it with new asphalt as part of a major pavement maintenance project on I-80 in Salt Lake City. In addition, drivers should keep in mind that I-80 is reduced to one lane in each direction during overnight hours and on weekends, between 1300 East and the I-80/I-215 split.
UDOT also reminds drivers the I-80 off-ramps to Foothill Drive are closed for several months for bridge reconstruction. To access Foothill Drive, drivers will need to use the detour via northbound I-215 or an alternate route.
Bangerter Highway between 7000 South and 7800 South: Bangerter Highway is scheduled to close in both directions between 7000 South and 7800 South in West Jordan from Saturday, June 10, at 11 p.m. to Sunday, June 11, at 8 a.m. In addition, 7000 South will be closed between Redwood Road and Bangerter Highway. Drivers should use alternate routes such as Redwood Road or Mountain View Corridor.
While the highway is closed, crews will remove the pedestrian bridge near 7000 South. The bridge will then be hauled away for future use by Salt Lake County. Removal of the pedestrian bridge will allow work to move forward to construct a new freeway-style interchange at 7000 South — one of four such interchanges to be constructed on Bangerter Highway by late 2018.
Westbound 3500 South ramp to northbound I-215: The ramp from westbound 3500 South to northbound I-215 in West Valley City is scheduled to close Friday night, June 9, at 11 p.m. for up to 30 days. Drivers should use 4700 South or S.R. 201 to access northbound I-215. The ramp is being rebuilt as part of the I-215 west belt reconstruction project that is underway between S.R. 201 and 4700 South. Construction on the project is scheduled for completion this fall.
Construction schedules are weather-dependent and subject to change.
