Man arrested in Old Town after gunfire, barricading himself in bathroom
A man in Old Town refused to surrender to the police for approximately 45 minutes during the early morning hours on Tuesday as officers were investigating a report that someone was attempting to break into his house.
The Park City Police Department said in an online statement officers responded to a house on the 300 block of Daly Avenue at 3:31 a.m. after receiving the report about a possible break-in. Officers heard sounds like gunshots when they arrived.
The officers created a secure perimeter around the house and ordered someone in a surrounding residence to leave, the police said. Phil Kirk, a police captain, said one person was asked to leave a house. The other residences were already vacant, he said.
The police said they attempted to call the man repeatedly, but he did not answer. At approximately 4:15 a.m., the man exited the house. He was not injured.
The police said officers retrieved a handgun and searched the house.
The Police Department requested assistance from the local SWAT team, but the man was taken into custody prior to the team arriving on Daly Avenue.
Nobody was inside the house when the police searched the residence, and the officers did not find evidence of a break-in, the police said. The officers, though, found evidence that a gun had been shot inside, according to the online statement. Kirk said approximately four rounds had been shot through two interior doors.
The police made sure nobody was injured in nearby homes.
The police said the man is 58 years old. He was taken to a hospital to be evaluated, the police said. The investigation is continuing and charges are possible. The police did not identify the man.
The Police Department had been called to the residence at 6:30 p.m. the previous evening, when the man was worried there might be someone in the home. Officers, though, did not find anyone inside or any evidence there had been a break-in at that time. The online statement said the man appeared to be under the influence of alcohol or drugs when the officers responded at 6:30 p.m.
The Summit County Sheriff’s Office indicated the man had barricaded himself in an upstairs bathroom and fired a handgun into the door. The Sheriff’s Office said the man crawled out of a window on the second story holding a handgun. He dropped the gun and was arrested, the Sheriff’s Office said. Kirk said the man was hanging on a second-story window ledge and the police assisted him to the ground safely.
