Man dies in crash in Parleys Canyon

by Patrick Parkinson, of The Record staff

A Sandy man died and a woman from the Kamas area was injured in two separate traffic crashes on Friday.

The second crash occurred on eastbound Interstate 80 in Parleys Canyon. A Sandy man in his 70s died when his Ford Fusion was hit head on by a Federal Express truck.

"The roads were wet from a light rain," said Sgt. Jeff Plank, a spokesman for the Utah Highway Patrol.

The truck driver was traveling westbound when the vehicle crossed the median and struck the car at about 6:18 p.m.

The driver of the car died on impact, according to Plank. The driver and passenger in the truck suffered minor injuries in the traffic accident.

Lanes in Parleys Canyon were closed as crews investigated the crash.

Meanwhile, a 31-year-old Kamas woman was airlifted to a Salt Lake City hospital Friday morning after her vehicle rolled near Kamas.

At the scene of the crash, South Summit resident Maria Arvizo complained of neck and back pain, Plank said.

Arvizo was traveling westbound on State Road 248 at about 7:45 a.m. when her Ford sport utility vehicle rolled, he explained.

The cause of the crash is under investigation. Plank said the vehicle rolled about 80 yards off the road. "She could not remember what had happened," Plank said.

The woman needed to be extricated from the vehicle.
