Midway man charged with raping a child

A Midway man is charged in Summit County with six first-degree felonies for rape, sodomy and forcible sexual abuse of a child.

The 36-year-old man reportedly abused the girl, who is related to him, several times in 2006 when she was 13 years old.

Jamie Lee Rasmussen admitted to detectives he had sex with the girl, court papers prosecutors filed in 3rd District Court state.

Rasmussen is charged with two counts of rape of a child, which are first-degree felonies. Rasmussen is also charged with three first-degree felonies for sodomy of a child and forcible sex abuse, which is a first-degree felony.

Rasmussen is charged with a third-degree felony for retaliation against a witness.

The abuse occurred in houses in Kamas and Coalville, the court filing states.

After Rasmussen’s arrest, his wife told investigators the man stated "he would kill [the victim] for making the disclosure and ‘that he would rather go to prison for killing [the child] than for raping her,’" according to court papers.

Rasmussen’s wife told detectives he threatened to "get rid" of the girl, information Summit County prosecutor Gus Chin filed June 10 states.

Attorney David Shapiro will likely represent Rasmussen, but the public defender had not been assigned the case on Monday.

Rasmussen is reportedly being held in the Summit County Jail on $250,000 bail.
