Miners advance in playoffs despite loss

The Park City High School hockey team battled No. 2 ranked Timpanogos Feb. 4 at the Peaks Arena in Provo in the double elimination round of playoffs. Although the Miners lost 4-1, coach Bruce Foster said the team had an excellent game and had improved since losing 9-1 to Timpanogos in the regular season.

Timpanogos started off strong, scoring in the first period and holding the Miners off until the second period. The Miners’ Zach Hable scored early in the second period, assisted by Laura Kubicki. Foster said the Miners were able to hold off Timpanogos until the third period when Timpanogos scored two more goals early on, making the score 3-1.

Foster said that’s when he decided to pull goaltender Will Parry so they could send in an extra forward. Timpanogos answered with a fourth goal into the empty net to win the game.

Foster said Parry played a great game, but Timpanogos outshot the Miners by a 2-1 ratio.

"If Will has a great game, we’re in the game," he said.

The Miners will face East in the consolation bracket on Wednesday, Feb. 10, at 9:30 p.m. in Bountiful. Foster said East is a big rival for the Miners’ hockey team, although they did not face each other during the season because they are in different divisions.

"This is a good matchup," Foster said. "Our kids will be very motivated. East has a good team this year, but a very beatable team. If we play like we did against Timpanogos, we can beat East. I’m glad we got a rink like Bountiful instead of Steiner, which would be a home rink for them."

If the Miners defeat East, they will advance to the winners’ bracket. If they lose, they will be eliminated from the playoffs.
