Miners pepper Payson

Jen Watkins, Of the Record staff

Park City High School hockey coach Bruce Foster told his players not to expect an easy win as they went up against Payson on Nov. 18. Although Payson had yet to win a game, Foster said they have one of the best goaltenders in the state.

"Even though we won 6-1, (our) shots on goal were 54," Foster said. "A lot of those shots were from down low, close to the net. We peppered this kid just one right after another (but) he kept on making the saves."

Foster said Payson was faced with the same situation the Miners have battled all year: skating with only two lines compared to the three lines most teams have.

"They have a very, very small team," he said. "They suited up 11 players, including their goaltender."

Foster said this was an important game for the Miners whose season record was 3-3-2 after defeating Uintah on Nov. 14. The Miners now have a record of 4-3-2, finally passin .500.

"It’s really a mental thing," he said. "You want to have more wins than losses."

"(Nate) really stepped up last night and had a great game," Foster said.

After ending the first period 3-0, Foster decided to send in the junior varsity. The Miners gave up a goal in the second period but scored two more of their own, ending the period 5-1. One of those goals came while the Miners were shorthanded with a man in the penalty box. The Miners scored their final goal early in the third period.
