Miners take second in division

The Park City High School boys’ tennis team took second place at the division tournament last weekend, held Friday and Saturday in town at the Park City Racquet Club.

With parents and friends looking on at the outdoor courts, Juan Diego bettered the Miners for first overall in the division.

"Juan Diego’s a tough team," said PCHS coach Jessica Watts. "They came out playing really well."

Junior Jackson Engen, consistent throughout the season, advanced to the final round at No. 3 singles before losing to a Juan Diego player.

"Jackson played great," Watts said. "The guy he was playing in the final was just on. There was really nothing Jackson could have done about it."

Freshman Matt Groy and sophomore Kasra Motaghed also won in their division at No. 2 doubles, taking the final in a three-set match.

"They really stepped up," Watts said. "That was probably the best performance for us."

Sophomores Caleb Wray and Stefan Dancy took third after a tough loss to Juan Diego in the main draw of No. 1 doubles.

The team will next play in the state finals at Brigham Young University on Friday, May 14, and Saturday, May 15.

"We’ll have our work cut out for us," Watts said. "Everybody’s just really excited for this final push. Hopefully we can get the job done."
