Miners to take eight to state

by Jen Watkins, Of the Record staff

The Park City High School wrestling team will take eight team members to the state championship Feb. 12-13 at Utah Valley University they made the top eight in their respective weight brackets at super Region.

The wrestling team first competed at a Region meet in January to determine its seeding at the super Region where schools from both the north and south regions come together to compete.

Coach Brenan Cole said Cash Knight and Skyler Barkdull, both first year wrestlers, went undefeated at Region. Barkdull, however, left the team after Region to pursue other interests.

"It was a real heartbreaker," Cole said. "He could have won super Region. He had one of the best records on the team."

At super Region Feb. 5-6, Justus Minardi, Brandon Woolstenhulme and Knight made it to the semifinals but not the final round.

"All of them, I felt, could have could have gotten into the finals," Cole said. "They all had to wrestle people that were just more mentally prepared."

Knight, Mindari, Woolstenhulme, Patton Magee, Matthew Payne, Mitch Freckleton, Devon Maddux and Andy Richardson all finished in the top eight and earned the right to compete at the state championship.

"I looked at the brackets. Everyone has a good shot at winning the first match," Cole said. "We’ve got to come in focused and ready to wrestle and not get awe-struck by the big mats down there at UVU."

Cole said if the Miners wrestle as hard as they did at super Region, he thinks they will make the top 10 at the very least. However, he is concerned about competing against Delta, which has over 20 kids going to state.

"It’s just kind of a put-up or shut-up moment," he said. "I’m nervous for the kids. They’ve worked really, really hard to get to this point. I’m a proud coach down there trying to help our team out. I couldn’t think of a much better group to be taking to state than this group we’ve got right here."
