My Sustainable Year

Diane Foster, Contributing writer

One thing that always amazes me about our community is the number of people who volunteer their time and energy to local non-profits and that the executive directors and staffs of these organizations are willing to put their values and passion first and their pocketbooks second.

I have Insa Riepen, Recycle Utah’s executive director, to thank for introducing me to the world of all things environmental. Eight or nine years ago Insa invited me to join Recycle Utah’s Board of Directors where I had the opportunity to participate in a broad range of environmental activities from the Water Festival to the community’s first Green Building Seminar. Without Insa as a mentor, I wouldn’t have my dream job as Environmental Sustainability Manager for the city of Park City.

We have our environmental non-profits to thank for many of the My Sustainable Year activities. In May, they include a hazardous materials collection event (May 8), a week to ride your bike to work and one to get your garden ready.

Week 21 of My Sustainable Year is Adopt a Green Non-Profit Week. All you need to do is donate your time or money to a local environmental non-profit. Here are a few of those organizations:

  • Clean Air Park City
  • Mountain Trails Foundation
  • Recycle Utah
  • Summit Land Conservancy
  • Swaner EcoCenter
  • Uinta Headwater RC&D Council
  • Wildlife Protection Society

Any non-profit director will tell you that every penny really does help. So skip the lattes this week and donate that money to a local environmental non-profit. Or get in touch with one of these groups and donate even just a couple of hours. New to town? There is no better way to meet your neighbors and learn what it really means to be a local.

And don’t forget to thank that Executive Director, that Operations Manager, the dedicated staff and volunteers. They are the environmental heroes of our community and they make green happen every day.
