New Teacher: Ben Ray

Biology teacher plans to take students outside

Students in Ben Ray’s Biology classes need to be ready to move, because he said he wants to keep students on their toes. Ray’s environmental science classes will be taking six or seven trips to the Swander EcoCenter to work on a project that will monitor environmental changes surrounding the Nature Preserve. His classes will also be making movies, plays, talk-shows, and commercials to keep things interesting. Ray said he wants to be sure that his classes are real so that students stay interested, even if they aren’t science-bound. He said his other goal is to get students away from phones and television for a little while.

Ray said that his interest in the Park City area started because he has family here. He said he’s happy to work in the area because it’s, "a concerned community with an interest in making better people." Ray moves to the Park City School District from the Jordan District, and said he doesn’t know what to expect because his previous classes were much larger with 35 to 40 students.

Ray said that he doesn’t think that the national education system as a whole is failing. He said that it’s up to individuals to make the system work. He says students today are less responsible for their actions and more afraid of consequences.

Ray, a Brigham Young University graduate with a Bachelor of Science in science teaching, will teach tenth-grade biology and environmental science at the Park City High School. He said that his favorite subject in school was science.
