No changes to the tax rate in South Summit

Dale Thompson, Of the Record staff

The South Summit School Board opted to keep taxes the same as last year, reported Business Administrator Zane Woolstenhulme.

Taxes on a $250,000 primary residence will be $867 while those on a business or second home of the same value will be $1,576.

"The purpose of keeping it the same is because it is going to cover the budget and generate approximately $430,000 which we will put in our building reserve fund," Woolstenhulme said.

This fund is for long term building projects and will be used for the construction of a new building when the district decides it needs one, he explained.

A handful of community members attended the meeting but did not voice any concern.

"We had three people show up for the hearing and they had no questions or comments by the time we were done talking about what we were doing," he said.

Compared to the rest of the state, Woolstenhulme said South Summit School District is probably in the bottom third for low tax rates.

"Last year Park City had the fourth lowest tax rate in the state and we were fifteenth lowest, out of 40 districts," he said.

Woolstenhulme elaborated Park City’s rate is lower because of the higher property values.

"Our tax base is a little over a billion and I think in Park City, theirs is about seven billion," he said.
