Our beloved husband, father, uncle, brother and friend, John Blum, passed away peacefully on May 9, 2006, in Cincinnati, Ohio, surrounded by family.
John was born in Basil, Ohio, on Jan. 18, 1939. He married Janice Marlene Dunn on Dec. 28, 1963. Having joined the Navy in 1962, he became a P-3 pilot and, in 1968, began working for Delta Air Lines as a pilot. His dream career spanned almost 25 years. John’s and Janice’s life of adventure led them to reside in Japan, Hawaii, Texas, Chicago and Atlanta, with a move to Park City in 1987 where they were active members of Shepherd of the Mountains Lutheran Church. During that time, John and Jan raised three daughters — Jennifer, Jodi and Johanna. In 1998 John moved from Salt Lake City back to Ohio to care for his father-in-law.
His family was most important to him and his kindness and generosity will forever be imprinted on our hearts. He put others’ needs before his own, donating his time, energy and a multitude of skills to anyone who needed them. His accepting nature and eternal optimism were an inspiration to all who knew him. A few days before he died, he told us with a smile, "I’m going to make orange juice out of [these] lemons!"
A frequent traveler, John enjoyed yearly visits to Hawaii with Janice and all family members who could join them. (He and Janice dreamed of one day moving back to Hawaii.) He could drive for hours on road trips and would patiently shuttle Janice to any beach where she desired to collect sand and shells. Some of their favorite trips include a passage through the Panama Canal, a 40th wedding anniversary Caribbean cruise with his family, and any visit to see daughters, family and friends.
Survivors include his wife, Janice, of Georgetown, Ohio; daughters: Jennifer Blum and Jodi Blum (Peter Emery), Salt Lake City, and Johanna Blum, Los Angeles; sisters: Ethel Wynkoop of Carroll, Ohio, and Dorothy (Keith) Ebright, Pickerington, Ohio; brother- and sister-in-law Ken and Linda Dunn of Torrance, Calif.; and numerous nieces, nephews and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, Lester and Virginia Blum, and his brother, James Blum.
A memorial service will be held at Peace Lutheran Church, Arnheim, Ohio, at 2 p.m., on Saturday, May 13. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to: John H. Blum Memorial Fund, c/o Fifth Third Bank, 4899 State Route 125, Georgetown, Ohio 45121. Funds donated will be directed toward charitable organizations that help those with housing needs (e.g. Habitat for Humanity, etc.). We think John would be pleased for his work to be continued in this way.

The Park City Police Department last week and early this week received several reports of parties, a common complaint to the agency during busy times of the ski season. The cases did not appear to be serious, but they seem to show an uptick in activity in the community.
