Obituary – Mr. Dolly (the cat)

A local icon and 17-year resident of Park City, Mr. Dolly, now rules in a place where there are no dogs: cat heaven.

Dolly arrived to take command of the newly rebuilt Dolly’s Bookstore in the mid 90s, and the town’s booksellers became cat servants to the second tuxedo cat to claim the name. He was known climb to every height in the store, from where he could survey his kingdom and hunt fur hats. From the beginning, he was a constant fixture in the front window, and later, between any employee and the register terminal.

Dolly ruled the roost at the bookstore for more than 15 years. Fearless and regal, his disdain for canines was legendary and oft acted upon. In one particular instance, witnesses claimed to have seen him ride a hapless dog out the door. "He kicked that dog’s butt," said one long-time Parkite. Park City dogs would enter the store knowing they were entering his turf, and to be very afraid. Visitors and locals would stop by specifically to greet the resident feline. And while he tolerated attention from humans, he preferred to be adored on his own terms.

Dolly is survived by his brother Che, dozens of current and past co-workers and countless adoring fans.

To honor Mr. Dolly’s noble roots of arriving at the bookstore through Friends of Animals, his family and friends ask that donations be made to FOA in lieu of flowers.
