A skiing accident Sunday at The Canyons killed a 46-year-old Cincinnati woman, the authorities say.

"She was in town with her husband and two children," said Ron Bridge, a spokesman for the Summit County Sheriff’s Office. "It is a tragic accident and it’s not something that is very common."

Edda Gunning was not wearing a helmet when she was found unconscious near a tree by the Painted Horse Terrain Park at about noon, Bridge said.

"The Canyons ski patrol rendered first aid and she was flown by air ambulance to University Hospital where she succumbed to her injuries," Bridge said, adding that Gunning suffered head injuries in the crash. "There were no witnesses She was just outside the terrain park and struck a tree."

Gunning’s children were skiing in the terrain park at the time, he said.

"She was actually paralleling her children as they were recreating inside the terrain park, going off the jumps and such," Bridge said.
