Park City candidates will face off in primary

Kristina Eastham, Record contributing writer

There was a small rush of activity at the Park City Clerk’s office as the filing window closed for November’s City Council election. Four new candidates joined the race for two open seats on the council and one more mayoral candidate signed up.

This brings the total number of candidates to six for city council and four for the mayor’s post. Due to the number of candidates, a primary runoff election will be held Tuesday, Sept. 15.

On Tuesday, R. Dan Portwood, filed to run against incumbent Mayor Dana Williams and two previous challengers, former Park City Mayor Brad Olch and local business woman Diania Turner. The two highest vote getters in the September primary will face off on Election Day, Nov. 3.

The newest candidates in the city council race are Cindy Matsumoto, Martin D. Fox, Mark Blue and Jack Martin Thomas. Thomas was nominated by petition because he was out of town when the filing window closed.

Alex Butwinski and John Stafsholt filed earlier this month. The primary election will narrow the field to four finalists who will be on the ballot on Nov. 3.

Incumbent Park City Council members Roger Harlan and Jim Hier, whose terms are expiring, are not seeking reelection.
