Park City officers have a busy day pulling over drivers
Park City police officers last Sunday were especially busy pulling drivers over, logging at least 26 traffic stops that day.
The traffic stops started in the overnight hours and lasted late into the evening, police logs showed. There were concentrations of traffic stops in the middle of the afternoon and in the evening. The officers were busy on the state highways that serve as Park City’s entryways and on streets like Deer Valley Drive.
Phil Kirk, the police captain who oversees the department’s patrol division, said the traffic stops were not conducted as part of a special operation as is the case sometimes when there is a concentration of stops.
Kirk, though, said the department had one extra officer on duty for training purposes at some points last week. The officer who was training could have been conducting traffic patrols on Sunday, he said.
Kirk also said Sunday was not a busy day for calls, giving the officers a chance to conduct the traffic patrols. Officers often monitor the roads when they are not responding to a call.
"They focused on traffic enforcement, had time to do that," Kirk said.
The traffic stops on Sunday stretched from the 1 a.m. hour to at least 11 p.m., the police logs showed. There were at least six in the 10 a.m. hour, 5 in the 2 p.m. hour and 4 in the 7 p.m. hour.
Some of the locations included:
Other streets where people were stopped included Holiday Ranch Loop Road, Monitor Drive and Stonebridge Circle.
Speeding drivers have long been one of the top law enforcement complaints of Parkites, and the police for years have made traffic patrols a priority. The patrols are most visible along the entryways, but the police say officers frequently patrol neighborhood streets as well.
The Police Department says more than half of all traffic stops typically involve a warning rather than a ticket. Kirk was not sure how many people pulled over on Sunday received tickets.
