Park City on course at Grass Relays

Adia Waldburger, of the Record staff

The Park City cross-country team’s quest to win a state championship title for both the boys and girls teams started on Saturday. In their first meet of the season at the Grass Relays in American Fork, both teams were already outperforming their time at the same point in the season last year.

Head coach Jeff Wyant estimated that the boys were averaging about 20 seconds faster than they had at last year’s meet. Their early season performance has earned them a third-place ranking in the state, but Wyant says that is underestimating them.

"I feel like they are better than that," Wyant that.

The defending state champion girls squad, currently ranked No.1, was led by Julie McMahon, a new student who moved to the area from North Carolina.

"She’s been a great addition to the team," Wyant said. "She’s fast and has a great work ethic."

Wyant also said that a fresh crop of fast freshmen is also giving the girls enough depth to carry them to the championship once again this year.

Underclassmen are also contributing on the boys’ team. As anticipated, team standouts Prescott McCarthy and Andrew Archer led the team on Saturday, but sophomores Luke Demetz and Cameron Edwards and freshman Scott Carson also finished in the top five.

The Miners were noticeably missing top runner Elli Reed, whom Wyant said was a big loss.

"To be out there without your fastest runner, means you lose a lot of time," Wyant said.

The team will spend the week preparing for the Judge Invitational on Saturday at the Cottonwood Complex at 8 a.m. Wyant says that once again Judge should be one of their biggest rivals in the region and in the state, but expects the Miners depth to win out. Park City will also host their own meet on Wed., Sept 6 at 3 p.m. at the Quinn’s Junction Sports Complex.
