Park City planning panel application deadline nears
The deadline for applications to serve on the Park City Planning Commission is Monday as leaders prepare for the first round of appointments to the influential panel since voters on Election Day approved most of the funding needed to acquire the Treasure acreage in a conservation deal.
The acquisition of Treasure will end a long-running development dispute that kept Planning Commission rosters busy over the more than 10 years of on-and-off discussions.
The Park City Council in early 2019 is expected to select two members of the seven-person Planning Commission. One of the incumbents, Douglas Thimm, wants to remain on the panel. The other, former Planning Commissioner Melissa Band, moved out of the Park City limits and no longer meets the residency requirement to serve.
The Planning Commission is seen as ranking second in influence of the City Hall panels, trailing only the City Council. The Planning Commission holds broad powers in growth and development matters as well as in crafting City Hall zoning rules. Many of the development disputes over the years have been before the Planning Commission, most recently Treasure.
A string of Planning Commissioners have successfully sought elected office over the years. Two members of the Planning Commission in the last 30 years — Brad Olch and Jack Thomas — later won the mayor’s office while other Planning Commissioners have won seats on the City Council. Two of the current City Councilors — Nann Worel and Steve Joyce — are former Planning Commissioners.
The Planning Commission meets on the second and fourth Wednesdays of the month starting at 5:30 p.m. The compensation is $100 per meeting.
