Park City soldier in Afghanistan re-enlists with Gen. Petraeus leading ceremony

Rebecca Scalies, a 26-year-old Army sergeant who spent her high school years in Park City, re-enlisted in February while serving at a base in eastern Afghanistan.

Scalies remains based in Jalalabad, Afghanistan. The photo dates from February. She re-enlisted for three years, according to her father, Carroll Stuart.

Gen. David Petraeus, the commander of the United States Central Command, led the re-enlistment ceremony and handed Scalies her certificate afterward.

Stuart is a retired Army master sergeant who served from 1951 until 1973 and fought in the Korean War.

Stuart says he is proud of Scalies and the family has a history of military service dating to at least World War I.

Her father says she wants to spend her career in the Army. She enlisted in 2005.
