Park City track excels in region tune-up

Senior Ali Williams was added to the long list of distance racers who will compete at the state championships for the Park City High School girls’ track team last Saturday, qualifying in the mile by a hundredth of a second and also securing a spot in the two-mile race.

Overall, the Miners’ girls’ team will have eight distance runners starting in Class 3A championships for the mile, provided talented freshman Ali Walker can overcome an injury that held her out of action in BYU.

Other highlights for Park City included, according to head coach Jeff Wyant, a strong performance in the boys’ 4×100 relay – in which hurdler Micah Sandusky has established himself as the fourth man – and a blistering 4:49 in the mile from sophomore Brandon Magie.

Next up for PCHS comes region competition on Wednesday and Thursday in Price. Wyant, as he has said before, thinks the boys will have a strong chance at a region title, while the girls might get some competition from a deep, strong-sprinting Wasatch team. It’s a somewhat odd scenario, considering the boys will likely have no chance of winning a team overall title at state, but the girls might be the favorites.

"For the guys, region is a bigger goal," Wyant said. "For the girls, our main goal is state. We’re kind of on track with what we expected for both teams so far."
