City Hall reaches $6.2 million deal for land along U.S. 40
City Hall has reached an agreement to purchase 340 acres of land along U.S. 40 close to Quinn’s Junction in a conservation deal.
The $6.2 million acquisition is expected to be formally approved at a Park City Council meeting on Thursday. City Councilman Andy Beerman said City Hall will purchase the land from the Florence Gillmor trust.
The land is known as the Clark Ranch parcel. It is located on both sides of U.S. 40. It is just south of the Park City Heights development site on the west side of the highway and just south of a park-and-ride lot on the east side of U.S. 40.
"We’re really pleased with the price," Beerman said.
The Park City Citizens Open Space Advisory Committee recommended the acquisition, he said. Negotiations with the landowner stretched over the past two years, Beerman said.
The deal "helps preserve a critical entry corridor," he said.
Beerman said City Hall will fund the acquisition using proceeds from a voter-authorized increase in a portion of the sales tax paid in Park City. Proceeds from the increase are used for land acquisitions, Main Street improvements and Old Town infrastructure.
More information about the acquisition is expected to be released early next week in anticipation of the City Council meeting.
Park City leaders have long targeted the entryways in its conservation acquisitions. They have wanted to preserve a rural feel along the stretches of S.R. 224 and S.R. 248 as they reach the city.
There is expected to be increased development pressure in Wasatch County east of the 340 acres. It seems likely Park City leaders want to preserve the acreage as a buffer.
