Two people were flown to a hospital in the Salt Lake Valley after suffering injuries in a traffic accident on U.S. 40 Wednesday afternoon, the Utah Highway Patrol said.

Todd Johnson, a highway patrol corporal, said a man and a woman who were in the front seat of the Chevy TrailBlazer were in critical condition when they were taken from the scene in medical helicopters. A 12-year-old boy and a man who were in the back seat suffered minor injuries and were taken by ambulance to Park City Medical Center.

The highway patrol was not immediately sure where the people are from or whether they are related. All of them were wearing seat belts.

Johnson said the accident occurred at 1:22 p.m. as the sport utility vehicle, which was towing a pop-up camper trailer, was traveling westbound cresting a hill at milepost six. The location is close to Quinn’s Junction. The trailer began to sway, causing the trailer and the vehicle to roll over into the median, the highway patrol said.

The eastbound lanes on U.S. 40 near the scene were shut down for 45 minutes for emergency responders. One lane was reopened followed by the other one.

Emergency vehicles could be seen lining a stretch of the highway, and law enforcement officers were restricting traffic at Quinn’s Junction.

The investigation is continuing. Johnson said there was not an immediate indication the driver was speeding.
