Man, using violence, tries to rob woman of paycheck along Bonanza Drive

Jay Hamburger THE PARK RECORD

A man attempted to rob a woman of her paycheck along Bonanza Drive early Friday evening, the Park City Police Department said, indicating that the perpetrator used violence as he tried to seize the check from the woman.

It was a rare Park City case involving violence during an attempted robbery, which itself is uncommon in the city. The case was reported at 5:01 p.m. on the 1700 block of Bonanza Drive, just south of the intersection with Kearns Boulevard.

In an online statement, the Police Department said the woman does not know the man. According to the police, the woman exited a bus on Bonanza Drive close to the western terminus of the Rail Trail. She was carrying the paycheck in her hand, the police said.

The police said a man approached her from behind and tried to grab the paycheck. She did not let go.

"When the victim resisted, the suspect hit her in the head with an open hand and took her to the ground," the online statement said, adding that the suspect then ran away on Bonanza Drive in the northeast direction.

The man did not get away with the paycheck or any other of the woman’s possessions.

The woman suffered an abrasion on an elbow, the police said. A medical crew examined her and she was released.

The police said officers searched Prospector for the suspect, but they did not find the person. He was wearing a black hooded sweatshirt, the police said.

Phil Kirk, a police captain, said investigators have few clues since the man wore a hooded sweatshirt.

"It’s very unusual," he said about the circumstances of the case, adding, "We don’t have a lot to go on."
