Officials form Vail Resorts-PCMR task force

Park City and Summit County leaders this week agreed to cooperate on a range of issues they anticipate will arise from Vail Resorts’ acquisition of Park City Mountain Resort and the plans to link PCMR and Canyons Resort into one property.

The Summit County Council and the Park City Council on consecutive days approved an agreement allowing the two governments to partner as they consider topics like planning-related decisions, taxes, land conservation, transportation, traffic and economic development.

The City Council on Thursday approved the agreement on a 5-0 vote. The County Council the day before cast a 4-0 vote with Claudia McMullin absent.

The agreement calls for the creation of a task force involving members from City Hall and the County Courthouse. The task force will consist of Park City Mayor Jack Thomas, Park City Manager Diane Foster, a member of the City Council, County Council chair Chris Robinson, County Manager Bob Jasper and a member of the County Council. Staffers from the two governments will also be involved.

City Councilman Andy Beerman was appointed to the task force with City Councilman Dick Peek as the alternate. The elected officials indicated they would reconsider the selections midwinter. The County Council did not select its representative.

Park City Attorney Mark Harrington told the mayor and City Council on Thursday the task force is expected to begin meeting shortly. He said Vail Resorts is anticipated to quickly move into the permitting process for upgrades.

The City Council did not discuss the task force’s upcoming work in any depth as they selected Beerman and Peek.

There was no public input during the City Council meeting.

Vail Resorts in September acquired PCMR from Powdr Corp. in a deal that also ended a long-running lawsuit centered on PCMR’s lease of Talisker Land Holding, LLC acreage underlying most of the resort’s terrain. Vail Resorts also operates the Talisker corporate family’s Canyons Resort as part of a long-term agreement.

Vail Resorts officials have said they hope to link PCMR and Canyons Resort as early as the summer of 2015.
