Parkites’ apathy toward Heights project ’embarrassing’ and ‘so disappointing’

Several members of the Park City Planning Commission on Wednesday night noted the apathy among Parkites during the months of meetings leading up to the approval of Park City Heights that night.

Charlie Wintzer, the chairman of the panel, said it was "embarrassing" nobody testified during what was the final hearing before the Planning Commission cast its vote. Another member of the Planning Commission, Brooke Hontz, said the amount of input was "so disappointing."

A third Planning Commissioner, Mick Savage, said he was "shocked" that the panel received so little testimony during the hearings. He said Parkites might not understand the magnitude of the development.

There was a burst of interest in Park City Heights in late 2009, when City Hall made public its intention to pay $5.5 million for a 50 percent stake in the land and become a partner in the development with The Boyer Company.

The arrangement was highly unusual for the municipal government, which more typically purchased land in conservation deals to set aside acreage from development.

Attendance was sparse during the months of Planning Commission meetings leading to the Wednesday vote.

Park City Heights is among the largest developments approved in Park City since the late 1990s.
