PCHS girls’ lacrosse: Miners complete sweep at Juan Diego

Kim Deimling, For The Park Record

Last Thursday, the Park City High School girls’ junior varsity lacrosse team traveled to Juan Diego’s Soaring Eagle stadium in Draper for its second game of the season. Juan Diego came out shooting hard and fast, scoring four goals against Park City in the first 10 minutes of the match. Head coach James Tautkus called a timeout to stop the bleeding and rally his team, which was down 4-0 early.

"After the talk that (Coach) James gave, we all knew what we had to do to win," said freshman Megan Lee, the team’s top scorer. "We all stepped our game up and kept it up for the rest of the game. After being down by so many and coming back, I have no doubt in my mind that our team can beat the odds and have a successful season."

The scoreboard reflected Tautkus’s successful pep talk as the team came back charged and focused, scoring six goals before the half. Sophomore Ellie Burton, team co-captain, fired in three goals, Lee scored two, while Lolo Frost added one.

Juan Diego’s offense continued pressuring the defense, and Park City rose to the occasion. Freshman goalie Sierra Deimling made eight impressive saves. Her fiercely protective defensive teammates, Kate Cier, Kendall Derber, and Lu Frankenberg, kept Juan Diego shooters at bay and forced four shots wide. The girls ran off the field at halftime with the score tied at 6-6.

Park City came back in the second half to score seven more goals to Juan Diego’s four. With assists and expert passing, Park City’s offensive/midfield team of Lolo Frost, Maime Graham, Maike Wells, Tess Holbrook, Sierra Wakefield, Jessica Kern, and J’Amy Vanderveur set the table for big scores. Goals came from co-captain Mina Berglund (1), Autumn Alden (1), Burton (2), and Lee (3). In all, Burton and Lee scored five goals each.

Defense played an outstanding second half, giving Juan Diego few opportunities to score. Deimling saved another four shots to end the game with 12 blocks.
