PCSD seeks community help
The Park City School District’s Superintendent Search Committee is asking for the Park City community’s guidance in hiring, what Mindy Halsey, co-chair for the committee, claims is the most important position in Park City.
According to Halsey, the PCSD Superintendent position was posted by the district at the beginning of the week. The 16-member committee comprised of six parents and 10 PCSD staff members tasked with assisting the Board of Education in the search for a new superintendent. As applications will be rolling in – the committee will be responsible for narrowing down the extensive list of applicants the district is expecting.
“This is going to be a big process,” Halsey said. “We are expecting a high number of applicants; a committee will have to go through with a fine tooth comb to make sure we deliver the best candidates to the school district. That’s why getting the opinion of the general public is so important.”
In order to gather the needed information, the committee is asking everybody in the community to participate in a brief survey regarding desirable attributes for the new superintendent. The input gathered from the survey will guide the work of the committee in terms of evaluating candidates.
“We’re not trying to reinvent the wheel,” Halsey said. “When evaluating applicants, we will need to weigh several things, including academic background and training, relevant experience, leadership style and personal qualities. We want the public to weigh in on these concerns.”
The short online survey, which can be found on the PCSD’s website, is intended for all community members to fill out. The survey can be found at the PCSD website.
“You don’t need to be a parent or a faculty member to fill out the survey,” Halsey said. “We’re looking for business owners, private or home school parents and even students to participate.”
Former Student Services Director, Tom Van Gorder has been serving as the Interim Superintendent since October 1, 2012, when Ray Timothy left the position to head the Utah Education Network.
The board voted unanimously to select Van Gorder, who served as the interim superintendent before Timothy was hired prior to the 2007-2008 school year.
According to Mo Hickey, Park City Board of Education President, in an interview with The Park Record in September 2012 – the board looked at the candidates in the district who had the right skill set to take over on interim basis.
“Based on previous experience, we made a unanimous choice that he was the right [choice] for the job,” Hickey added.
Van Gorder has filled several different roles since joining the PCSD in 1994.
State law prohibits the Board of Education from hiring a permanent replacement for a superintendent between the time a new school board member is elected and when a member takes his position in January, according to Halsey.
Van Gorder has not said publicly whether he will seek the permanent position at the PCSD.
