PCST’s Molly Leavens rises to the top in the West

David Hampshire, The Park Record

Molly Leavens of the Park City Ski Team (PCST) shrugged off an ankle injury to post her team’s best individual results at the Western Region J3 (ages 13-14) Junior Championships last weekend in Montana.

Leavens finished second in the slalom and fifth in the super G and had the fastest time in the giant slalom (GS) until she was disqualified for missing a gate in the second run.

Leavens was one of 15 PCST athletes who qualified to represent the Intermountain Division in the championships, which also attracted the top J3 skiers from the Far West, Pacific Northwest, Northern and Alaska divisions. The super G races were held at Big Sky Resort on March 16, and the GS and slalom races were held at Bridger Bowl Ski Area on March 17-18.

Among other top-10 results posted by Park City skiers:

  • David Domonoske was fifth in the men’s slalom and 10th in the super G
  • Ian Griffith was fifth in the men’s super G
  • Aleksandra Uzieblo was fifth in the women’s GS
  • Megan Dingman was sixth in the women’s GS
  • Mac Henderson was seventh in the men’s GS
  • Sophie Smith was eighth in the women’s super G
  • Andrew Miller was 10th in the men’s GS

The results of the Western Region J3 Junior Championships will be used to help determine invitations to a USSA development camp to be held in Park City in April.

Meanwhile, the Park City Ski Team J4 and J5 (9-12-year-old) racers were at Brundage Mountain in McCall, Idaho, for the Intermountain Division Championships. Skiing in difficult conditions, Park City athletes had some of the top results, including six of the top 10 times in one of the slalom races.
