Have you had any pain lately? I hope not but I know there are many that suffer with arthritis pain in the joints, stiffness, and sometimes-swelled joints. All these conditions create a big challenge for the person that suffers from them.

Maybe you may be feeling almost doomed to a life full of pain, lack of energy and restricted in your physical activities? You are not alone, there are millions of people suffering with this decease and there are things that have been done to help you with your condition. Here are some important points that you need to consider to improve your lifestyle and manage your pain:

– First of all we need to talk about your ATTITUDE or outlook to your situation. It is true that suffering pain through the day, not sleeping enough, can cause fatigue. How do you feel when you are so tired you can hardly have your eyes open? How about tired and with pain. This situation can drive you to a depressive state, or to anger. You have to get ahead of your pain and fatigue. You need to develop a positive attitude toward your situation, look for ways to take control of your pain and know that some people have done research and there are many things that can help you.

– DIET: talk to your doctor about your diet and what things may help you to slow down your disease from progressing and lower your pain. Take notice of what you eat and see how your body reacts to this food. Make sure you eat a balanced diet, this means including vegetables, fruits, and enough grains. Watch your salt and sodium intake, don’t eat too much sugar, drink enough water every day, and don’t forget to include vitamins, with minerals and, of course, calcium. Try to have and maintain a healthy weight, this is very important. When someone is overweight and has arthritis, his or her chances of having osteoarthritis increase. Having 10 extra pounds, increases the force that you put in your knees by 30 to 60 pounds every time you take a step.

-EXCERCISE: it is very beneficial to keep moving, have an appropriate exercise program that can help you improve sleep, loose weight, have less fatigue, decrease bone loss, get stronger muscles, increase flexibility, control joint swelling and flexibility, improve endurance, reduce joint pain and stiffness, and keep your cartilage and bones healthy and strong. Your exercise program should depend of the kind of arthritis you have, the areas of your body that are affected and the intensity.

There are three kinds of exercise that you should include in your program; A) Aerobics, this activity will give you energy; help you sleep better, control your weight. Walking, water-aerobics, swimming and stationary bike are good aerobic training. These activities will also benefit your heart. Be wise and don’t overdue, if you are hurting a lot start slow and careful and increase your activity. At least exercise 3 times a week for at least 20 or 30 minutes. B) Range of motion exercises; these will help you with stiffness and increasing your flexibility. (Doing stretches and yoga) do this every other day. C) Strengthening exercises, these are good to gain and maintain muscles. Weight training is an excellent activity, be about adding weight as you do these exercises.

-BE WISE with your activities; don’t stay in the same position for a very long time, this creates stiffness and pain. Whether you are at your computer, reading or sewing, pay attention to your body. Take short brakes to relax your muscles and joints. Always check your posture this can really increase pain or comfort. Use your larger muscles to do lifting, use your legs instead of bending. Balance your activities with rest and keep the stress low this will help you controlling the pain and the energy level. Consult with your doctor and get busy doing those things that will benefit you. Please take care of yourself and don’t let arthritis bring you down! Be supportive if you have a family with arthritis. Artritis
