Police practice for the horror of a gunman at the Marsac Building

The Park City Police Department this month has scheduled two exercises designed to prepare officers to respond to a scenario envisioning a gunman shooting people in the Marsac Building.

The exercises are scheduled to start at 5 p.m. on Dec. 18 and Dec. 27. Approximately 10 officers will be at the municipal building each evening. The officers will remain inside the building, which will be closed to the public at that hour.

The exercises are meant to familiarize the officers with the building, which serves as City Hall. There are a variety of departments and other rooms throughout the three floors, including the mayor’s office and the Park City Council chambers.

"It’s a public building. You have people in there of all walks of life," said Lynn Nagel, a police sergeant who is helping oversee the exercises.

The Police Department has conducted similar exercises in other high-profile buildings like schools and the Main Street nightclub space once known as Harry O’s. Nagel said exercises could be held in the future in other buildings like the Park City Library and Education Center and the Park City Municipal Athletic & Recreation Center.

Nagel said officers must prepare to enter a building with a gunman quickly, making the exercise critical to learning about the setting.

"It’s automatic. You just don’t think about it," he said. "You’re running away, we’re running to. That’s why training is so, so important."
