Post a campaign sign, but follow the rules

by Jay Hamburger THE PARK RECORD

Parkites may, of course, post signs on their property supporting their picks for the Park City Council.

But the signs must adhere to City Hall regulations. Park City’s regulations include a section covering campaign signs, saying that they cannot exceed three square feet. The size restriction allows someone to post a standard campaign sign on their property. The top of a sign cannot be more than four feet above the ground.

People are allowed to put signs on their own property but only if they are placed at least 10 feet from the curb or the street pavement. If the 10-foot mark would put the sign inside a building, a sign may be placed three feet in front of the building. Signs may also be placed in windows.

They are not allowed in a side yard, however, and they may not be lighted.

Permits from City Hall are not needed to post a political sign. The signs are not allowed to be posted on public property.

Political signs started to pop up in the last few weeks, as the City Council campaign began in earnest. There are four people incumbents Liza Simpson and Dick Peek as well as challengers Anne Bransford and Andy Beerman — seeking one of three seats on the ballot in 2011.

There are occasional complaints about candidates breaking the campaign-sign regulations, particularly the prohibition of signs on public property. Campaign signs are sometimes seen in the Old Town roundabout, as an example.

Voter-registration deadlines, meanwhile, are approaching. People registering through the mail must postmark their form by Oct. 9. Someone submitting the form in person must do so at the county clerk’s office in the County Courthouse in Coalville or the city manager’s office at the Marsac Building by Oct. 24.

Someone who wants to vote with an absentee ballot must apply to be able to cast one. The application is due by Nov. 4. Absentee ballots returned by voters must be postmarked prior to Election Day to be valid. It must be received before noon on the day that the election canvass is held.

For more information contact the County Clerk’s office, 615-3203 from the West Side or 336-3203 from the East Side. Information is also available on City Hall’s website, http://www.parkcity.org . Select the ‘Election Information 2011’ option from the ‘Government’ dropdown menu.
