Public Works chief recovering from heart surgery

Jerry Gibbs, the longtime Public Works director for City Hall, is recovering from open-heart surgery in Salt Lake City after he fell ill last weekend.

His wife, Stacey Gibbs, said he remained in a critical-care unit at St. Mark’s Hospital midday Wednesday, but he might be moved to a hospital room later Wednesday or Thursday.

She said surgeons on Tuesday replaced one of his heart valves and repaired another one. They also bypassed an artery.

"Everything went wonderfully," Stacey Gibbs said.

She said doctors said he likely suffered rheumatic fever when he was young, which damaged the heart valves.

Stacey Gibbs said the family appreciates the support they have received.

Gibbs has led the Public Works Department since 1983, and he is among the longest-serving members of the Park City government.

City Manager Tom Bakaly said staffers are thinking of Gibbs and his family. He said he does not expect Gibbs to return to work for at least a few weeks.
