Rec centers offer ski conditioning options
With just a few weeks left until the snow flies, October is the time many Parkites begin to prepare for the slopes. Local recreation centers are offering various options for different ages and abilities to get snow-ready as soon as possible.
Basin Recreation is offering a new kids pre-ski yoga class. Taught by certified child yoga instructor Zabrina Jones, the class is based on asanas or poses, which incorporate breathing, stretching, strength and focus.
"It’s great for your balance and strengthening your arm and leg muscles. You also get your core nice and strong before you get on the mountain," Jones said.
But more than preparing young bodies, Jones is hoping to prepare the children’s minds.
"It helps you stay balanced and focused. It’s not the average yoga class," Jones said.
Jones has also created her class to be kid-friendly. Sessions meet on field turf at the Basin Recreation Field House and Jones uses animal movements and fun games to keep children engaged. She also feels that the non-competitive aspect of yoga allows kids to relax and be themselves and really get into the movements.
"It helps children learn to be patient with their bodies," Jones said.
The Pre-Ski Yoga class is designed for youth, ages 3-9. The class meets every Sunday from 1- 2 p.m. starting on Oct. 22 and continues for eight weeks. The cost is $70, or children may drop in for $14 per class. Students must bring their own mat or contact Jones to bring extra mats. For more information, visit http://www.basinrecreation.com . Jones offers similar classes at My Time Fitness for children seven and over on Friday afternoons from 3:30-4 p.m. The class is $60 for five weeks and begins Oct. 20. A preschool and Kindergarten class is also offered at My Time on Tuesday and Thursdays from Oct. 17 through Nov. 16. The cost is $80 for four weeks. The Park City Racquet Club offers a Ski Conditioning class for adults, which began Oct. 17. This year’s program is taught by new instructor Corey Smaller, a black-belt in karate, who is committed to helping participants achieve their optimal strength and balance before taking to the snow.
According to Park City Recreation fitness coordinator Karen Yocum, the class is heavily focused on plyometric exercises and cardio conditioning.
"It’s a lot of stuff to get your legs and upper body prepared for skiing," Yocum said.
Yocum says that in years past the class has been very popular, and that even the regular circuit training classes start getting larger right before the ski season.
Ski Conditioning is included in regular club membership and meets Tuesday and Thursday evenings from 6-7 p.m. in the weight room.
South Summit Aquatic and Fitness Center has decided not to offer a ski conditioning class this year due to low enrollment last year, but center director Stephen Sutherland says that they still have excellent training classes for ski enthusiasts. He says that he recommends interested members take classes focused on core conditioning and weights to prevent injury, and cardio classes and body sculpting to get in shape.
