Recycling Tip of the Week for Saturday, June 30th
June 29, 2007
Automobiles are probably the single largest possession that people ever throw away. Whether a car is totaled in an accident or has reached the end of its working life, all cars eventually end up in the scrap heap.
Environmentally conscientious car recyclers have sprung up around the country to treat cars in a sustainable way. One of them is Tear-A-Part at 652 South Redwood Road in Salt Lake City.
Tear-A-Part de-manufactures cars in a clean, state-of-the-art process that captures toxins and prevents them from entering ground water.
They extract all the environmentally hazardous fluids from the vehicle and other toxic parts such as switches with mercury.
Following the principle that re-use is better than hazmat disposal, Tear-A-Part offers discount retail purchases of salvaged windshield cleaner, brake fluids, antifreeze, oil and gasoline. Usable auto parts are inventoried and resold.
In partnership with Tear-A-Part, Recycle Utah is offering a charitable donation letter in the amount of $499 for every car donated to Recycle Utah.
