Redefining rustic furniture

Look out, antlers and varnished-log couches The Kaya Furniture and Design store in Silver Summit is redefining "mountain rustic."

Husband-and-wife owners Brian and Anthea Lloyd are importing wood furniture and accessories from Asia to accent living rooms, patios and gardens.

"Wood furniture works really well with mountain décor," Brian said. "If you’re going for wood furniture, teak is the wood of choice. It’s the Cadillac of patio furniture."

The teak furniture is from Java and is harvested from government-controlled, sustainable teak plantations instead of natural forests. The Kaya carries the largest selection of teak patio furniture in the state, Brian said.

An extensive showroom of the furniture is available at Kaya through September. After that, teak patio furniture will still be available year-round, but will not be displayed in the same manner, Anthea explained.

Many of the most popular items in the three-year-old were included by accident.

Kaya offers hand-carved stone Buddhist sculptures from China for gardens. They initially had one or two to add atmosphere to the store, but kept getting requests for them.

The store also has a wide selection of Middle-Eastern rugs. These were included after a dealer they met at a trade show offered them to sell on consignment.

Spanning nearly all of Asia from the Middle East to Bali, Kaya offers a wide variety of items from the familiar to the totally unexpected. Right inside the front door, an intricately carved teak gazebo nearly two stories tall greets customers.

"I’m really proud of the store. The inventory is unique and eclectic and really works," Brian said.

The Lloyds are such fans of teak because of its durability in weather. Possessing a high oil content, teak has been used for centuries in ships.

Left untreated, the wood will begin to gray over time but will stay usable for 20 years. Treating with oil occasionally will preserve its golden color indefinitely, he said.

"So many homes have 10,000 square feet of deck and don’t have patio furniture or have lesser quality stuff. We’re here to promote the outdoor lifestyle," Brian said.

Employee Donetta Dellapenta got involved with the store because she had filled her home with its products.

A neighbor of the Lloyds, she fell in love with their offerings the moment they opened their first crate three years ago.

"I begged them for a job. My whole living room looks like their showroom. About 90 percent is their stuff," she said.

She even tore out her carpet and put in hardwood floors so she could decorate with one of their rugs.

Some of their items are featured in the Showcase of Homes, including the patio furniture and a Buddha statue accenting one of the homes in Tuhaye.

Anthea said the idea for the store came from similar ones in California. Imports from Indonesia are popular there, and Park City residents with second homes in California will frequently use their products to create the same feel in both houses.

"A lot of people are looking for that very special piece that’s going to stand out in their home," Dellapenta said.

The Kaya also offers water features and can order custom cushions for the furniture to match any décor.
