Utah State Board of Education adopts new definitions

The Utah State Board of Education approved new definitions for qualified teachers as outlined by Bush’s No Child Left Behind Act.

The following was taken from a summary of the board’s meeting held on Jan. 12. For the complete list please go to: http://www.schools.utah.gov/

Highly qualified secondary school teachers must: have a bachelor’s degree or higher or National Board Certification in the teacher’s subject matter, or have documentation that the teacher has passed a Board-approved subject matter test, or have documentation of course work equivalent to a major degree

Highly qualified special education teachers in K-8 core academic subjects must: Have a current Utah educator license and Be assigned a position consistent with that license and at least one of the three following: meet the highly qualified definition for elementary teachers, or pass a Board approved elementary content test

Highly qualified special education teachers in 6-12 core academic subjects must: hold a current educator license and be assigned a position consistent with that license and pass a Board-approved content test
