Ruzicka speaks to President of Gay-Straight Alliance Club

by Dale Thompson

Gayle Ruzicka revealed she has never been to a Gay-Straight Alliance meeting.

As the legislative session got underway on Monday, Derek Painter a Park City High School senior, went to ask legislators some difficult questions.

He is President of the Gay-Straight-Alliance Club at PCHS and was there representing the Progressive Student and Youth Council.

Painter presented a survey to Gayle Ruzicka, Sen. Chris Buttars, R-West Jordan, Rep. Jackie Buskupsie, D-Salt Lake City and Sen. Scott McCoy, D-Salt Lake City.

The first question he posed to Ruzicka was, "What happens at Gay-Straight Alliance meetings?"

She responded that she’s never been to one, although she’s spoken with counselors who have attended them.

"They talk about their choices and why they make them," Ruzicka said.

In the past Ruzicka has gone on record saying she fears students discuss sex at these meetings, which led Painter to ask, "What should we do if football players talk about sex in the locker room?"

She responded, "The coach would stop it."

Painter later said that she had all of her sound bytes well rehearsed.

Other questions that were posed include if a person who is drunk can consent to sex and if Utah should have an overnight shelter for homeless youth who are not accompanied by a guardian. The results of the PSYC survey will be printed in a later edition.
