Semi rollover closes I-80 at Echo Junction
Eastbound Interstate 80 was closed at Echo Junction Thursday after a semi-truck rollover and fuel spill, according to the North Summit Fire District.
The Fire District tweeted news of the accident at approximately 1:50 p.m., indicating the eastbound flyover lane from I-84 to I-80 was also closed. As of 2:10 p.m., one eastbound lane on I-80 had been reopened.
The incident is the latest in a string of semi-truck rollovers in recent months at Echo Junction, which includes a sharp curve where the speed limit drops from 70 mph to 30 mph. At least three other rollovers have happened there in the last two months.
In response, the Utah Department of Transportation has indicated it plans to add signage in the area to alert drivers of the sharp curve and the need to slow down.
According to UDOT, more than 50 accidents have occurred at Echo Junction over the last three years. Officials have said human error, such as speeding, has been a factor in most of the accidents.
