Six permits to build houses lift Park City construction numbers
The Park City construction industry posted a solid month in August, City Hall said, indicating that the dollar value attached to the permits issued last month ranked second in 2012.
The Building Department issued 97 permits in August worth approximately $6.4 million combined. The figure climbed sharply from the previous month and from last August. The tally was a little more than $3.6 million in July and a little less than $3.8 million in August 2011.
Most of the permits were issued for alterations or additions to existing buildings. The alterations and additions accounted for just more than half of the dollar figure for the month.
Alterations and additions have had an outsized impact on the numbers since the recession when compared to the years before the downturn. The permits for alterations and additions, though, are typically less valuable than those issued for new projects.
The August report, though, was promising as City Hall issued six permits for houses. The permits for the houses are valued at approximately $2.9 million combined.
There were no permits issued in categories like duplexes and multi-family buildings.
The August dollar figure trailed only the $7.9 million worth of permits issued in May. The spring is usually busy at the Building Department as developers seek permits at the start of the area’s construction season.
The year-to-date number sat at $33.6 million through the end of August, up from the $26.9 million that had been tallied through the same period in 2011. The total through August points to a slight uptick this year, but the numbers still trail by a wide margin the boom years between the 2002 Winter Olympics and the onset of the recession. The industry reached to more than $100 million in a year at that time.
The recession struck at a time when construction numbers were expected to level off anyway as the number of large development sites inside Park City dwindled.
The number of electrical, plumbing and mechanical permits was up from July but down from the previous August. The Building Department’s inspection load — an average of about 72 per day — was up from the previous month but down sharply from August 2011.
