Ski for free

Jen Watkins, Of the Record staff

As part of a nationwide program promoted by Snow Sports America, Soldier Hollow will offer a ski-for-free day on Saturday, Jan. 9, for those who have never cross-country skied before.

Howard Peterson, executive director of the Soldier Hollow Legacy Foundation, said the invitation will be extended even further for those who have never skied on newer equipment. Peterson said many skiers may have old equipment in their garages from 20 years ago and could benefit from learning on the new equipment.

Skiers can arrive at Soldier Hollow, 2002 Soldier Hollow Lane, Heber, between 1 and 4 p.m., though early arrival is encouraged. The program is first come, first serve. Skiers will have the opportunity to work with trained instructors in both cross-country skiing and snowshoeing. Equipment is provided by Soldier Hollow. Peterson said to go through both the skiing and snowshoeing lessons will take about an hour and a half.

"Someone is going to have a nice experience by then, but they’ll probably be tired by that point," he said. "But a good tired. We have several easy trails right from our lodge. No one has to be concerned they’re going to be on Olympic trails. That’s for another day."

Peterson said last year was the first time Soldier Hollow participated in the program. He said the staff cycled through 400 sets of equipment three times to accommodate all of the skiers.

He said he wants to encourage families, especially those with young children, to participate on Saturday.

"There aren’t many things in the winter on an affordable basis that families can make use of," he said. "We think snow sports are a huge improvement on someone’s life, family and fitness."
