Spiro to share secrets
May 26, 2009
Ben Wiemeyer of the Salt Lake Community Arts Center is the first to admit it: bigger is better.
One of Spiro Arts’ residents for May, Wiemeyer indulges in large-scale sculpture, painting and installation art. He met with Sue Galusha’s Advanced Placement art students Friday morning to talk about the work. Wiemeyer is in the process of hanging the murals from Spiro’s exterior, visible from Three Kings Road.
Spiro Arts invites patrons to meet the people behind the art and ideas during its May resident artist events at Silver Star.
On May 27, from 6-9 p.m., Park City, Spiro will host resident-artist readings and an open studio event. Light refreshments and hors d’oeuvres will be provided.
From 7-8 p.m., enjoy resident readings with award-winning novelist Patricia Santana of San Diego as she reads from her books "Motorcycle Ride on the Sea of Tranquility" and "Ghosts of El Grullo." Santana has received multiple awards for her work. Pushcart nominee Vickie Weaver of Hagerstown, Ind., will read from her novel-in-progress "The Mercy Killing."
Open studio events will include Salt Lake City Artist Resident Ben Wiemeyer’s 30-plus foot paintings, which are being installed on the exterior of the Sprio Arts studio and will wrap around the entire front side of the building. Video installation artist Ann Oren of Brooklyn will showcase her most recent video piece, filmed and edited during her residency at Spiro.
